The Dial turn their attention away from league action today (7 October) when they travel to south London to play Barnes in the first round of the Surrey FA Saturday Intermediate Cup.
After being knocked out of the competition in the second round against Westminster Casuals last season, Steve Brown’s new-look squad will be looking to progress in the competition.
Today’s opponents currently ply their trade at step 9 in the Surrey South East Combination Intermediate League Division 2. The cup fixture was due to be played at Rosslyn Park but has since been moved to Barn Elms Sports Centre in Barnes with the later kick-off time of 3:30pm.
With the expected absence of Dave Porcher, Louie Rogers, James Vass, Harley Rogers and Conor Harlowe, Brown will be looking to rotate the squad in a bid to give others more game-time to help maintain fitness and competition for places. However, Brown is hoping to welcome back defender Arnie Linturn into the squad after a five-match match lay-off through injury.
Speaking ahead of today’s cup match, Brown said: “We had a great result [8-2] against Manorcroft last week (30 September) and a great training session in midweek, so I'm looking forward to a change of scenery and some cup action.
“I believe it’s the first time the club has played in London. I don’t know much about Barnes, but I’m sure it will be a competitive fixture. We have prepared for the match like we have for any other fixture.
“With the absence of some key players, it will give others a chance to stake a claim for a shirt, which is what it’s about; being ready to hit the ground running when the opportunity presents itself.
"I know the players are keen progress in the cup, so hopefully we can get off to a winning start against Barnes this weekend," added Brown.
For fans travelling to Barn Elms Sports Centre, the nearest station is Barnes on the South Western Railway. Check the journey planner here. It's then a 25-minute walk (1.3 miles) to the ground. Additional free parking is available along Rocks Lane (SW13 0DA), which is a short walk from the sports centre.
