DIAL LOOKING TO TRUMP SERIAL WINNERS IN FINAL

DIAL LOOKING TO TRUMP SERIAL WINNERS IN FINAL

Andy Fitzsimons7 May - 06:05

Brown is banking on a polished performance

Dial are potentially just 90 minutes away from winning their first county cup when Steve Brown’s side step out against Worcester Park this evening at the Meadowbank Stadium. 7:30pm k.o.

Having already beaten Parkside (6-0), Worplesdon Phoenix (6-1), Tongham (6-0) Horsell (2-1) and Addlesone (3-0) en route to the final, the stage is now set for Dial to try and go one better to secure their first silverware since winning the league and league cup double in 2024.

For Worcester Park, tonight’s Surrey FA Saturday Intermediate Cup final will be their third appearance in four seasons, after beating Keens Park Rangers (5-0) last season, and edging aside Frenches Athletic (1-0) in 2023.

Despite losing 8-7 on penalties (2-2 after 90 mins) against Wimbledon Casuals in the Surrey Premier County Football League – Premier Challenge Cup on bank holiday Monday (4 May), The Skinners are still chasing a league and cup double this season.

After being awarded a walkover (postponed fixture on 25 April) against relegated Bagshot means that the southwest Londoners are now just one-point behind Wimbledon Casuals in the league table and with two games remaining. They also have a vastly superior goal difference.

Worcester Park have become something of a bogey team for Dial over the past two seasons, with The Skinners winning three of their four meetings; the most recent being a 2-1 home defeat for Dial on 31 March.

Tonight will also be the battle of the clubs’ top goalscorers, with Park’s Harrison Deacon (19xL, 2xLC, 4xCC) and Dial’s Adam Bicknell (20xL, 1xLC, 2xCC) both vying for top dog, as well as the league’s golden boot honour.

Brown will again be without George Frith for the trip to Dorking, after the influential midfielder suffered a fractured knee against CB Hounslow & Abbots three-and-a-half weeks ago to add to Dial's growing list of players unavailable to face The Skinners.

However, experienced 40-year-old striker Matt Bunyan is expected to return to the fold due to the ineligibility of Danny Taylor and Brad Sweeney, while George Lawrence and former Dial captain Will Neville could also make the 16-man squad.

Elsewhere, Charlie Marshall is likely to be fit to play after missing Dial's last league game of the season against Laleham on 22 April, while Aidan Phillips could also return for what would be only his second appearance this year due to study commitments.

Speaking candidly to DialSquareFC.com on Wednesday (6 May), Brown said: "Based on player availability and current form, I’m sure many will see us as the underdog for this year’s county cup final.

“Worcester Park have been on a great run and will obviously be looking to bounce back from Monday’s league cup final defeat against Wimbledon [Casuals] to lift the county cup for the second time in consecutive seasons.

“Although we haven’t played for two-and-a-half weeks, which is not ideal, the boys have, on the whole, maintained a good level of fitness.

“We know that Worcester Park are a well-organised and physical side, but it’s a one-off fixture and I’m confident that the players available will give a good account of themselves to get the job done,” added Brown.
