Dial travel to Wimbledon Casuals this evening (8 May) knowing that a clean sheet will secure Dial's fourth consecutive promotion.
With Dial now level on points (see table) with fellow promotion-chasers AFC Walcountians after last week's 4-1 win over Worcester Park, it's come down to the final league game of the season to determine who will be promoted to the Combined Counties Football League.
It's arguably been the most closely contested season in the history of the Surrey Premier County Football League, which has seen no less than five clubs top the table since the season began on 24 August 2024.
Following Banstead Rovers' resignation from the league on 29 April, the outcome of Dial's season will hinge on tonight's trip to Casuals (7:30pm k.o.), who secured the Surrey Premier County Football League title for the third successive time on 26 April after beating Frenches Athletic 5-0 away.
It will be a battle of wills at Quintin Hogg Memorial Sports Ground, with Dial needing just a point to leapfrog AFC Walcountians and AFC Cubo into second spot, and Casuals looking to extend their 25-match unbeaten league run.
With captain Will Neville recovering from a medial collateral ligament tear and fellow centre back James Vass also unavailable, along with Dylan Averiss and Sam McDermaid. Brown is expected to keep faith with the defensive duo of Matt Bunyan and second top scorer Charlie Marshall to fill the void.
Callum Abraham-Barlow is also expected to be given the nod after missing the past two league games, while experienced shot-stopper Andy Rider will come back into the side after missing the Worcester Park fixture due to illness.
Speaking candidly ahead of tonight's clash against Casuals, Dial boss Steve Brown said: "There's a lot at stake, so the pressure is on the lads to travel to Wimbledon [Casuals] and get a result.
"On paper, it's the hardest scenario we could face; playing the league champions, who haven't lost a league game all season. However, as I said last week, when our backs are against the wall and we have to produce something, we are more focused, our concentration levels improve and our work-rate is much better.
"We certainly have the quality to compete with Wimbledon. The lads have what it takes to get promoted, and after last Friday's result over Worcester Park, I know they won't want to leave anything on the pitch. I just hope it's enough to get the club to where we want to be next season," he added.
For fans and football enthusiasts, it's a reminder that tonight's match away to Wimbledon Casuals will be played at the home ground of AFC Cubo in Chiswick, not at Wimbledon's normal home ground at the Xcel Sports Hub in Walton-on-Thames. The last time the two side's met was on 5 April 2025, which finished in a 3-3 draw at Alwyns Lane. You can revisit the full report and pictures here.
