After one false start, Dial will travel to Parkside today (1 March) in the quarter-final of the Saturday Intermediate (County) Cup. 2pm k.o.
A pitch inspection at Goals (Tolworth) on Friday confirmed that today's cup tie is good to go, as Dial seek to book their place in their first county cup semi-final since since March 2022.
Following the postponement of the original quarter-final tie last Saturday (22 Feb), manager Steve Brown wasted no time arranging a friendly with Combined Counties Football League Premier South Division side Sheerwater at Eastwood Leisure Centre on Tuesday (25 Feb).
While the result was inconsequential, Brown used the opportunity to gauge players' match fitness and aptitude ahead of today's 12-trip from Chertsey to south London.
It's the first time that Dial have been drawn against a team from the Kingston & District Saturday Football League after losing 2-0 against RC Old Boys in the Surrey FA Saturday Junior Cup almost three years ago.
Meanwhile, today will mark six weeks since Parkside last played a competitive league or cup fixture due to several postponements. Remarkably, the hosts' last fixture was on 18 January, when they beat Milford & Witley 5-0 away in the third round of the county cup. Prior then, they hadn't play since 30 November, when they beat Molesey FC Reserves 5-3 at home in the second round of the competition.
While Adam Aziz and Antonio Dembele are both cup-tied, Brown is pleased to welcome back Jordan Carter, Dylan Averiss, Louie Rogers and Adam Bicknell; all of whom were unavailable for the first tie. And with striker Charlie Marshall unavailable, Brown may use the opportunity to push Matt Bunyan into an advanced position to provide a greater aerial threat.
Speaking to DialSquareFC.com on Thursday, Brown said: "I thought it was important to get in some minutes against Sheerwater in midweek. They're a good, energetic side, so it was a good fitness test for us. It served the purposed it needed to.
"It will be good to finally get today's county cup match on; it's a great competition to be part of, and a competition that I always thought we could do well in, which is why I'm taking a strong squad.
"Like before (when we played Thames United at Goals (Tolworth), we will need to adapt our style of play to the conditions, but it's something you need to do from time to time to keep things fresh.
"The players know what I expect; anything less than 100% and being clinical in front of goal won't be accepted," he added.
