Dial Square signed off their last league game at home with a disappointing performance, slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Horsley ‘Reserves’.
Milo Flaherty’s fortuitous lob which cannoned off the post 5 minutes into the second-half, was enough to separate the teams.
It was a slow start from The Dial and with some wayward passing throughout the first-half, it was to be a half of little to cheer about.
The only column that was accumulating nicely was yellow card count, but almost none seemed warranted.
Nic Donaldson did have the ball in the net on two occasions, but both were ruled out for offside.
That’s all we offered going forward in an otherwise bleak first 45 minutes.
We owed it to Gavin Miller that we ended up all square at the break. Two spectacular sliding tackles prevented certain goal bound efforts and his presence at the back was vital for the home side.
After the restart, nothing much changed and we deservedly found ourselves behind after Flaherty’s hit and hope, which gave Zach no chance, rebounded off a post and across the line.
1-0 and it didn’t look good.
There was a brief push within the last 30 minutes. We pinned back Horsley and started to look much more threatening. With Ed Mckinlay put back into an attacking role in search for an equaliser later on in the game, we threatened more, but when the full-time whistle went, we only had ourselves to blame.
It wasn’t a great way to finish our last league home game, but we still have a massively important 1/4 final in the Surrey County Cup, so it’s time to prepare for that and see what we can achieve come the end of the season.
