In what was Dial Square Football Club’s biggest ever game to date, the result was one to forget.
With the final of the cup just 90 minutes away, The Dial failed to show the spark needed to overcome an ordinary RC Old Boys.
Huge credit to the away side, who showed great character throughout the match. It was clear that they weren't going to be a pushover by any stretch of the imagination.
It was Old Boys who took the lead when inside five minutes, Dial Square’s backline was breached and, despite Zach Ward's best efforts, it was Gitari who came out on top in the one-on-one.
The Dial limped to half-time with little to show and despite not threatening for the rest of the half themselves, Old Boys were in relative control of their lead.
Things didn’t get much better after the break, but as the half went on, Dial did start to see more of the ball and started to look the better side.
Chances were almost none existent for both sides, but as we entered the last 10 minutes, we found an extra gear and pushed on for an equaliser.
Then, with just eight minutes remaining, the referee awarded a penalty after a handball in the RC Old Boys’ penalty box.
Up stepped #TheDon who sent the ‘keeper the wrong way. 1-1 and it looked like we were taking the game to penalties!
However it was heartbreak in the last minute, when Joel Paternoster was adjudged to have pushed their striker to concede a penalty.
McGee made no mistake from the spot and it sparked huge celebrations from the travelling fans and away dugout.
The final whistle went soon after and that was that.
The season has now drawn to a close and there is to be no final for us in our first full season as a football club.
We would like to wish RC Old Boys the very best of luck in the final.
