It was back to back defeats for Simon Martin yesterday, for the first time in his Dial Square career, as AFC Spelthorne came away from Alwyns Lane with a 3-1 victory in the ‘Premier Challenge Cup’ group stage.

From the off, the away side were clearly up for a battle and showed a good array of tackling. The Dial were more than up to the challenge, but without their suspended skipper, couldn’t muster any chances in the opening exchanges.

AFC Spelthorne took the lead on the half-hour mark, when Stuart Reynolds converted his chance past Zach. It stayed that way until half time, although The Dial could’ve notched a goal when Nic Donaldson saw his header saved by their number 1.

The second half wasn’t much better for the home side. Gavin Miller back amongst the back four was in good form with some superb tackles and an excellent block to keep the score respectable.

Just after the hour mark, substitute and top scorer for AFC Spelthorne, Darren Butler, added a second for the visitors with a cool finish when put through on goal.

It was all but over as a contest 7 minutes from time when AFC Spelthorne added a third, but substitute Jake Taylor did grab a consolation for Dial Square with a few minutes remaining.

It leaves The Dial pointless after two group games in the League Cup and staring at an early exit. Next up is an away trip to Chiddingfold in the same competition.
