DEBUTANT SWEENEY SEALS THE DEAL AGAINST CUBO

Andy Fitzsimons13 Dec - 20:23

Dial excel in second half to claim the points

Dial moved back to second in the Surrey Premier County Football League table after registering a 3-1 win against AFC Cubo this afternoon (13 Dec) at Alwyns Lane.

Two goals from on-loan striker Bradley Sweeney, and another from Danny Taylor, ensured that Steve Brown's side got back to winning ways following last weekend's blip away to Keens Park Rangers.

Influential midfielders Zak Hawker (suspended) and George Frith were both unavailable for the visit of the west Londoners, who remain something of an unknown quantity this season due to a mixed bag of results.

On the flipside, Brown was able to welcome back Charlie Marshall to start alongside Jimmy Norman in the backline, with Taylor coming straight into the starting eleven too.

It was the visitors though who got their noses in-front when a rogue back pass from Louie Rogers fell invitingly for Kian Houston, who played in Callum Orris on the crossover to open the scoring after just five minutes.

In response, Norman struck a freekick over the bar and Sweeney’s snap-shot from the edge of the box was easily gathered by Sam Harrison in the Cubo goal.

In quick succession, a great through-ball from Tom Adag picked out Taylor, whose left-foot shot was palmed away by Harrison as Dial started to pile on the pressure.

Although, Cubo came close to doubling their lead when Houston got in-front of his marker, but the striker scuffed his shot with the goal at his mercy which Mead was easily able to save.

True to form, Dial managed to get back on level terms when Rogers' rasping shot from edge of the box was blocked on the goal-line, with Taylor on hand to tuck home the rebound from eight yards in the 28th-minute.

Dial almost made it 2-1 on the half-hour mark when Harrison was caught in no-man's land. But the Cubo shot-stopper regained his position in the nick of time to deny Sweeney’s glancing header from Aidan Doran’s cross.

With Dial enjoying the lion’s share of possession, George Lawrence was inches away from toe-poking Jordan Carter’s cross-shot into the net as the visitors absorbed another wave of attacks.

But Cubo weren’t out to make up the numbers when Mead had to react quickly to save Gustas Graziunas’ back header at the near post on the cusp of half-time.

A great driving header from Marshall 15 minutes into the second half flew just wide of the post from Lawrence's in-swinging cross.

But as fatigue began to set in, it was more plain sailing for Dial in the second half, as proved when Sweeney raced clear of his marker to give the hosts a 68th-minute lead.

With Dial continuing to press, Matt Hayes skied his shot over the bar, and Jonathan Corner’s shot-on-the-run was charged down inside the box.

However, a great solo effort from Sweeney made sure of the points in stoppage-time when he slid in to score his second of the match after Harrison had saved his initial shot. It finished Dial Square 3 AFC Cubo 1.

Speaking after the match, Dial’s assistant manager Mike Kinsella said: “After going a goal behind from an unforced error, I was pleased with the way we responded and regrouped in the second half.

“It’s always going to be tricky when two of your most experienced players are missing. That said, I thought Danny [Taylor] and Brad [Sweeney] took their goals really well, and the lads that came in did a good job.

“It’s a long season, so you need everyone to be firing on all cylinders, which I think the lads proved against Cubo,” he added.

DIAL SQUARE: Mead, Rogers, Vass, Doran, Norman (Corner), Marshall, Carter (Cenzano), Adag (Rose-Davies), Sweeney, Lawrence (Hayes), Taylor (Federico).

MotM: Bradley Sweeney
