DIAL SECURE PROMOTION AFTER STONES' WIN

DIAL SECURE PROMOTION AFTER STONES' WIN

Andy Fitzsimons6 Apr - 21:54

Taylor double helps see-off neighbours

Dial finally secured promotion from the Surrey Premier County Football League to the English football league pyramid today (6 April) after a convincing 4-0 win away to Addlestone.

Having already put 10 goals past The Stones in the league (7-0) and the quarter finals of the Premier Challenge (League) cup (3-0) in March, the stage was set for Dial to make it a clean sweep to guarantee a top-five finish.

With only Dial and West London based CB Hounslow & Abbots eligible for promotion this season, Steve Brown’s side travelled to Jubilee High School knowing that a win would make it mathematically impossible for Abbots to catch them after The Dragons lost 3-1 away to Keens Park Rangers on Saturday (4 April).

Despite being without leading marksman Adam Bicknell, who netted five times against The Stones last month, Brown still managed to assemble a strong squad, with striker Bradley Sweeney coming in for late absentee Charlie Marshall.

Captain Jimmy Norman almost put the visitors ahead after just 90 seconds when his powerful header from Jordan Carter’s corner was brilliantly tipped over by Luke Edgecombe.

Carter, who had been a thorn in the hosts’ side in the previous two meetings, then scuffed his shot wide of the near post after some neat footwork to great the opening.

However, it didn’t take long for Dial to take the lead when Carter managed to pick out Danny Taylor, who got in front of Kai Wah Lam before powering his header past Edgecombe after just eight minutes. It was an excellent goal from the former Woking triallist.

Despite Dial enjoying a lion’s share of possession, Jake Elliott had a good opportunity to put The Stones back on level terms, but he sliced his shot off-target from 12 yards with quarter-of-an-hour played.

Taylor thought he had doubled his tally a minute later, but his toe-poke effort from close range was ruled out for offside.

Elliott then charged down Sweeney’s shot after a neat through ball from Ross Ewen, before Lam upended Sweeney in the box, leaving Tim Oon with no alternative but to award Dial with a penalty midway through the first half. However, Edgecombe managed to get down low to save Carter’s spot-kick.

Dial were unrelenting and unapologetic as they continued to lay siege to Addlestone’s goal, with Norman’s 25-yard freekick going agonisingly wide of the far post.

Although Stones’ debutant Yash Patel came close to registering his first senior goal shortly after, but was unable to apply the killer touch as the ball rolled across the six-yard box unimpeded 10 minutes before half-time.

There was no let-up for The Stones in the second half when an own goal – following a goalmouth scramble – extended Dial’s advantage just two minutes after the break.

Two soon became three when Taylor latched onto a great through ball from Sweeney to notch his 10th-goal of the season in the 58th-minute.

Sweeney again went close after a good delivery from Daniel Cenzano, before Callum Abraham-Barlow rounded off a disciplined performance when he popped up to make it 4-0 three minutes before stoppage time.

The result means that Dial will be playing at step 6 of the non-League pyramid next season, subject to being rubber-stamped by The FA when it releases its club allocations for Steps 2-6 for the National League System next month.

Brown was full of praise for the attitude and endeavour his players showed against Addlestone. He said: “The lads knew how important it was to come away with three points. They knew what was at stake and didn’t need reminding.

“I thought it was an accomplished team performance. We were familiar with their style of play and how to beat them. We now need to take that same ethos and energy into our remaining fixtures to finish as high in the table as possible before our county cup final against Worcester Park on 29 April,” he added.

DIAL SQUARE: Mead, Rogers, Abraham-Barlow, Ewen (Vass), Norman (Hayes), Langley, Carter, Frith, Adag (Rose-Davies), Sweeney, Taylor (Cenazno). Unused sub: Brown.
