DIAL HOLD LEAGUE LEADERS AWAY FROM HOME

DIAL HOLD LEAGUE LEADERS AWAY FROM HOME

Andy Fitzsimons

Douglas' acrobatics ensure visitors earn a point

Dial held league leaders AFC Walcountians to a goalless draw at The Reg Madgwick Stadium today (31 Aug) to remain undefeated over the bank holiday weekend.

A superb save in the 87th-minute from Dial keeper George Douglas ensured Steve Brown's side received a share of the spoils in Cobham, and a second clean sheet in two days.

Dial kept faith with the mainstay of the squad that beat Clanfield 2-0 at Redding Way on Saturday (29 Aug), with former Tooting & Mitcham United and Godalming Town midfielder Deji Adeosun replacing the injured Callum Abraham-Barlow in a holding role.

Despite The Counts +11 goal difference after only three league games, it was Dial that looked more likely to open the scoring inside the first 15 minutes when Callum Wright fired over from 12 yards after a great pull-back from Charlie Plant.

Then, a superb interception and strength on the ball from Adeosun to fend off three opposition players enabled George Lawrence to thread the ball through to Dan Cenzano, who unfortunately shot wide of the target.

Striker Joe Wornham headed over for the hosts from close range midway through the first half, before Matt Hinks rifled a 25-yard shot over for Dial on the half-hour mark.

Adam Aziz also caught the eye when he swivelled to outsell two defenders in the box, but his shot was easily saved by Boorer in what proved to be the final effort of the half.

The Counts had a penalty appeal waved away just two minutes after the restart when Theo Huey-Walker claimed he was brought in the box by Ross Ewen.

Both sides made changes in a bid to bolster their attacking and defensive options, with Aziz, Charlie Plant and, later, Joshua Adjei making advances down the left flank for Dial. Meanwhile, The hosts were looking to exploit the pace of winger Chike Ejezie to find an opening down the right in a bid to break the deadlock

With goalscoring opportunities at a premium, Plant came close when he turned on the edge of the box only for his shot to bobble just wide of Boorer's far post. But it was The Counts who looked odd-on to score, only for Douglas to pull off a magnificent one-handed save to thwart Wornham in the 87th-minute, as both sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Speaking after the match, Brown had nothing but praise for his players, most notably Douglas for his first class performance in goal. He said: "Every player put in a real shift against Walcountians. I thought we were the better side in the first half, and they edged it in the second [half]. So, in reflection, a draw was probably a fair result.

"We still have several key players out, which will add to the competition for places. I'm looking forward to having everyone available. On our day, I have no doubt that we will give a side a good hiding," he added.
